The difference between a Moonroof and Sunroof

Posted on Tuesday 20 May 2008

You may have seen that may limousines advertise the fact that they have a moonroof. But what is a moonroof? Is it simply a sunroof through which you look at the moon or is it a totally different feature?

It’s a totally different feature. A sunroof is an opening in the roof of a vehicle. They can either be fixed or they can tilt or slide open. Traditionally sunroofs are opaque and to let the sun in, you would have to open them up, while moonroof’s were designed to be transparent or tinted so that while they remained closed, light was still able to filter through.

However, the two have melded together over the years and you will now often find ‘roofs which can retract like a sunroof yet are tinted like a moon roof.

There is also often a sliding shade within the vehicle which matches the interior upholstery and can hide the roof all together. Sunroofs can be electric or manual. Manual roofs generally only pop open while electric roofs will retract fully into the body of the car.

Sun and moonroofs come in many shapes and sizes and are typically found in limousines, luxury cars and sports cars to provide passengers with wind in their hair and a funky feature in their luxury cars.

As well as the tilt and slide roofs, there are also top mounted sliding sunroofs in which a large glass panel slides open in the tracks on the roof, and a panoramic roof system is multi panelled and offers a sunroof over the front and rear of the vehicle.

While sunroofs come in many forms, the moonroof made its first appearance in the 1970s as a creation of Ford. Ford was the first to install the glass sunroof, which they called a moonroof. So while the moonroof is simply a glass sunroof, the two are often used interchangeably.

So next time you go to hire a limousine with a moonroof, don’t expect to be able to stand up and put your head out, for that you’ll need to ask for a sunroof.
